Moris Farms Morellino 2008, Wine

Moris Farms Morellino 2008, Wine

Origin: Italy - Tuscany
Characteristics: This is a high energy and vibrant, representative Morellino! Chiefly Morellino (read a special clone of Sangiovese that does well in this coastal clime), this has a bit more structure from 10% Syrah & Merlot. Albeit nervy (for which the great Sangiovese are known), this has a density and a richer quality than many of its Tuscan cousins with roasted notes, minty cherries, chewy tannins, and floral top notes that together make for a sensuous and textural wine I could drink for hours on end.
Wine review by Nicholas D. Livingston, August 2011

"The colour is a brilliant ruby red. The bouquet is intensely fruity and the taste is full flavored with a wonderful freshness and harmony. Pair with a variety of plates, meats, pasta, or spicy dishes."

Expert Review
"The mainstay of production (from Le Mozzine) is 90% Sangiovese plus “others’. This light, fruity, easy- drinking wine sees no oak. In better years there may be a riserva, aged a minimum of two years. Moris Farms are also experimenting with a grape native to the hills north of Massa Marittima called Gorgottesco—one to watch."
-Nicolas Belfrage, MW

89 Points - "The 2008 Morellino di Scansano bursts from the glass with ripe red berries, flowers and minerals. This is a remarkably harmonious Morellino punctuated by cool, fresh notes on the close. Morisfarms 2008 Morellino di Scansano offers compelling drinking in a polished, elegant style that delivers awesome quality for the money. Readers will have a hard time finding a better, more rewarding wine for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2013."

Drouhin Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge 2017
Characteristics: We have more Red Burgundy without notes that any other varietal or region. That is probably because we buy more wines from this region than any other and barrel tasting notes are very early impressions so not very useful in this context. The wines vary within the region but are nearly all made from the same varietal, Pinot Noir, so I can give you a reliable idea of what to expect. The colour can range from robish to quite light but don’t be fooled. The nose is tease; its ethereal, dried roses, spring deciduous leaf, tea leaves and often a sweet earthiness. In the mouth it is often very supple and silken. The flavours are from a motley palette including cherries of most any hue, sometimes truffle, gaminess and a wonderful comforting earthiness.

Girardin Savigny-les-Beaune Serpentieres 2015
Characteristics: Vincent Girardin 2009 Savigny-les-Beaune Serpentières, Côte de Beaune | 13.5% | Delicious wine from 50 year old vines of Pinot Noir on the Premier Cru climat of Les Serpentières. The village of Savigny-les-Beaune is located in the Côte de Beaune, a couple miles north of the village of Beaune. The wine area of Savigny-les-Beaune is one of the oldest of Burgundy and a lot of parcels belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy and to the Abbeys of Citeaux and Maizières. "Les Serpentières" is located at the opposite of the Marconnets' plot and here the soil are chalky with stones and gravels a bit of clay. In 228 liter French oak barrels of which 15% are new, malolactic fermentation takes place and the wine is then aged 14 months, and then bottled without fining or filtration following the moon calendar. A wine with plenty of fruit with well integrated structure, this is full and round, very long and charming start to finish. In terms of food pairings, this is versatile but for starters think starters, pâtés, white and red meat.

Marchesi Pancrazi Pinot Noir villa Bagnolo 2010
Characteristics: Pinot Noir Villa di Bagnolo Toscana IGT: 100% Pinot Nero almost exclusively from Burgundian clones. The vineyards are south-facing, and the microclimate is cool and well ventilated, with significant temperature variance between daytime and nighttime. Altitude is moderate, 0-492 feet a.s.l., favoring grape maturation. The soil is shaly and clayey, volcanic in origin (Monte Ferrato is an extinct volcano) and particularly rich in iron, which is instrumental to Pinot Noir complexity. Water supplies in the Bagnolo area are abundant throughout the year and the soil itself has high levels of humidity; these are crucial factors for the variety, which is especially sensitive to drought. The wine is aged one year in French oak barriques followed by one year of bottle aging. Small crops and cru characteristics endow the wine with superb intensity, purple color, remarkable fruit aromas reminiscent of blackberries & plums, also mint nuances, coffee, licorice & vanilla; round, soft, luscious & lingering on the palate.
