Gaillard Cote-Rotie Rose Pourpre 2004, Syrah Wine

Gaillard Cote-Rotie Rose Pourpre 2004, Syrah Wine

Origin: France - Rhone

Artisan Vineyard Notes

Characteristics: Pierre Gaillard’s 2004 Rose Pourpre is strong, refined and worth ageing. Derived from the parcel of Côte Rozier on the slopes of Ampuis from a gifted parcel just below the justly famous La Landonne vineyard whose wines retail between $400 and $500 a bottle, this south facing amphitheater is comprised of the same brown schist, rich in iron oxide and remains one of the warmest parts of Côte Rôtie. This plot, measuring less than two acres, turns out exhilarating Syrah wines with extremely peppery noses balanced by the sweet and sour tension of plums and roasted meats. Given ten years to come into its own and mature into a great wine, the 2004 Rose Pourpre embodies this to be sure but now also bears tertiary notes of lofty pine resin and heady roses in bloom –all grounded by a meaty bouillon bottom –there is nothing like an aged Syrah that is still fresh despite all these savory, dry roasted mushroom depths. This is a fragrant wonder just opening into a glorious and graceful stride.

Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 1/3L 2017
Characteristics: Moor-ved-ruh sounds pretty French for a Spanish grape. Bien sur; it's Spanish! But there it's known as Monastrell. When you're in California or Australia they'll make a fuss over something called Mataro; that's right, it's the very same. Or is it? Mourvedre's spiritual home might have migrated north to France however. Bandol yields captivating vatietal Mourvedre that makes you wish all the world could entice the floral, earthen fruit that shows up willingly in their wines -although Cline's Ancient Vine and Small Berry are among the Americans with the closest resemblance. A side by side tasting left me dumbstruck. Along the Rhone, Mourvedre exercises a grise eminence that quietly lends its nuance and depth to the great Chateauneuf-du-Papes and the other southern Rhone blends. Further south along the sea rests Collioure where Mourvedre enchants the local Syrah and Grenache into wonderfully deep reds. The fortunate few to land their hands on Mourvedre are hooked for life.

Mont Olivet Chateauneuf-du-Pape 6/1500 2016
Characteristics: Garrigue and ripe raspberries meld licorice, sage, rosemary and lavender! Fragrant with roses all over the palate and long onto the finish this is exemplary Chateauneuf-du-Pape in that it is thoroughly packed with engaging red and black fruit but really expressive of the fragrant garrigue one loves to find and thrilled when found at this intensity. If you love the heady scent of woodlands, eat game, or simply like to sip wines of soul and inimitable character, this needs ticking off your list of sought after joys -you will have a friend for life.

Vigneti del Vulture Piano del Cerro Aglianico 6/750 2009
Characteristics: 100% Aglianico del Vulture from 70 to 80 year old vines grown on volcanic soil rich in clay, calcium, nitrogen and tuff. Pre-fermentative maceration takes place at 41°F for 10 days and is followed by fermentation carried out using natural yeasts for 60 days at a maximum temperature of 79°F. The wine is put into new barriques for 24 months. Intense deep ruby with hints of chocolate with a persistent creamy and fruity finish. The result is a wine with a marked personality with silky, highly persistent tannins.
