Bo Barrett of Chateau Montelena

(posted 5/8/2009)

Soil makes all the difference.

With great modesty, world renown winemaker Bo Barrett will be the first to tell you great wine is made in the vineyard. As the man behind Napa's Chateau Montelena, Barrett knows what making benchmark wine entails.

Learn about Chateau Montelena's microclimate and soil profiles and how these inspire different results from different varietals. Knowing the land you work can make the difference between good and great wine. When your land happens to be at the foot of Mount Helena in Napa Valley, the world seems brighter still.

Featured Wines

Château Montelena Chardonnay 2007
Characteristics: Bright, tight, and lees-y on the nose. The fruit is in the melon and apple spectrum but the focus right now is on structure and smoky yeast. There is a super mouth here of lemon, mineral, yeast and great zesty acidity. This is not your Father's Napa Chardonnay (or maybe it is?).

Château Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Characteristics: "The Montelena earthy-berry aroma is very concentrated, showing lovely, classic Cabernet, warm earth and sun baked cassis with licorice and spice. On the palate there is integration of strong, deep, concentrated fruit in a perfect balance. Super fine tannin grips the palate, with ripe, round flavors that dance right on the seam between classic Bordeaux and California styles. I look back on the battle of 2004 with fondness because the wine is so wonderful now. And after 25 or more harvests we love the greatest challenges, because once they are but memories the toughest years become the most legendary adventures." -Winemaker's notes

Château Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
Characteristics: Montelena 2005 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California 14.2%

Elegant, lush and refined, this is very classic in style with layers of fruit, cassis, hints of raspberry and blackberry and a faint mint. Rich without force, full without excessive weight and offering a fruit that spreads over the palate, this wine is wonderful. The palate shows thick skinned berries that rear up with a cedar, mineral and mint. Long and extended growing made 2005 a terrific year to showcase a breadth of flavors. This may be the cab to unite all my friends that all harbor their own firm preferences because I find so much for everyone and yet nothing in excess. -NL, tasted March 2009

Château Montelena Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
Characteristics: Beautiful purple color. This is so lovely; it is invigorating but in a beautifully gracious style. The wine is as tight as Mikhail Baryshnikov's leotard and just as provocative. It's surprisingly and delightfully long and supple; surprising because it still has a promising future. Lots of black fruit and some tobacco in the flavors. Again, its flavors just last and last in the mouth. A real treat!

Château Montelena Zinfandel 2006
Characteristics: 2006 Chateau Montelena Calistoga Zinfandel…Intense garnet color gives hint as to what style of Zinfandel this Estate is known for. It’s deep rich flavors of blueberry, cocoa powder and all spice all flow seamlessly into its formidable finish of dusty tannins and leather.
