The Art of Selecting Rosé

(posted 5/10/2012)

Great Rosé is a wonderful thing and proof that we are meant to be happy, but how does a premier wine importer decide on superb Rosé wine vintage after vintage? Despite Rosé being one of the most playful categories to explore, choosing the best Rosés among the countless thousands is no simple task. Here Wil Bailey, Portfolio Director of The Wine Company, takes a moment to outline their process; The Wine Company's is a thorough and intimate method that circles the globe, involves tasting innumerable Rosés, and (for such an uplifting wine) weighs heavily on the mind of this astute portfolio director - although he is keen to remind us that the enjoyment of Rosé is an easy matter!

Argyle Brut Rose 2008
Characteristics: 50% Pinot Meunier, 40% Pinot Noir, 10% Chardonnay.
Knudsen Vineyards
Dundee Hills AVA, Willamette Valley

2008 Argyle Brut Rosé Tasting Notes:
We are really dialing in amazing sparkling Rose these days! The aromas of this wine are uniquely complex and delightful. There’s nothing this sophisticated out in the New World of sparkling Rose. The aromas are a lovely pink/red rose petal with a spice driven red berry like wild salal or Oregon native black cap raspberry. Put in a hint of Valencia orange citrus. The flavor is super rich and viscous. Fruit complexity of black cap raspberry, cardamom spice revolve around a core of plum and fresh pomegranate beads. The finish is a long, pleasant experience like enjoying the leavings of the best strawberry shortcake you’ve ever enjoyed. There is something magnetic about the quality of this wine. Stick one into your fridge!

Baron de Seillac Brut Rose
Characteristics: Writing as I smack my extremely happy lips, I ask who wouldn't love more Provencal sparkling wine in their lives? This rose is a great follow through to Baron de Seillac's Blanc de Blancs' 1-2 punch proving Laurent Breban makes top notch sparkling wine. 100% Grenache lends a fresh, floral fragrance and a dry palate replete with white cherries, a faint mandarin acidity, and a fine mousse. At 11.5% alcohol, this wine is a dreamy option as a ready aperitif, a delightful bruncheon wine, or a terrific vin de soif! Buy it by the case and keep one in the ice box at all times. Baron de Seillac is a shining example that shows sparkling wine should be a daily affair -adding joy and panache to each and every day.

Baumard Cremant Rose Carte Corail
Characteristics: This is was a surprise addition to our offering of Baumard wines, one day it just appeared in the inventory. One of our favorite sparkling wines is the Cremant Brut from Baumard, cremant meaning lightly effervescent. So on their last visit to the winery its no surprise that the rose struck a harmonic cord with our staff. Really pretty in the glass, its equally attractive in the mouth. Suggestive of strawberry and rhubarb pie with melting vanilla ice cream. A total charmer! -LAC

Cline Mourvedre Rose 2011
Characteristics: Mourvedre has to be approached carefully, because often the aromas of Mourvedre will have an earthy edge that confuses people when they expect the hedonistic raspberry of so many wines. This rosé has that perfect amount of earthiness, with hints of dried leaves and loam soil combined with the ultra-fresh raspberry and black fruit zest of a great rosé. Bright, lively, bone dry, and finishes with a lift of acidity akin to pink lemonade (without sugar). In other words, absolutely glupable and endlessly enjoyable. Have with grilled shrimp on a summer evening for a match made in wine heaven.

Dragon Cuvee Prestige Rose 2011
Characteristics: Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache combine to great effect. Clean penetrating scents of red currants and citrus that carry on over the palate with a fresh blooming floral nuance and high note of blooming mustard. As refreshing as can be with a delicious aromatic quality about the mouth that is polished, round and compelling in a tongue curling sort of way, this rosé embodies yet another wondrous vintage one that brought polish, lift and great character and at 12.5% we all ought to thank Provence!

Figueirasse Gris de Gris Rose 2011
Characteristics: Bright, fresh, and clean with a top note of watermelon near but not quite to the rind and replete with bright alpen strawberries –juicy fresh in the mouth, alive on the lifted and minty palate. As one with an appetite for food friendly wine and not looking for a stiff cocktail 12.5% is welcomed. In a world where few rosés are more than merely quaffable, this wine has presence, spice, texture and confidence –a delight! Welcome to Grenache Gris from the Languedoc Coast of Golfe de Lion.

Hebrart Brut Rose
Characteristics: "In a world where the really great Rosé Champagnes are both very rare and very expensive, I am happy to present you with Jean-Paul Hebrart’s Rosé NV which he makes in enough quantity that we can stock it year round, AND it is less than $40/bottle to you! It is also delivers a great balance of fruit and structure as Jean-Paul combines equal parts Côte des Blancs Chardonnay from Oiry and Chouilly and Pinot Noir from Mareuil sur Ay to walk the razor’s edge of crispness and power."
Wine review by Wil Bailey

Half Chardonnay and half Pinot Noir with 8% of which is red Pinot Noir for color | Spends 25 months on its lees for texture and fragrance. Lovely cerise cover and smother the face in bright, constant kisses of cherries along a persistent bead and lovely mousse. Absolutely lovely color, this is elegant and graceful but with more flesh on its bones than say a Keira Knightly but not far off the mark, more so the lovely Kate Mara –although with the Champagne being rose and she a darling red head, this might be color biased. All the same, the palate on this wine is bright as the day is long and awash in cherries and wild plums with a lovely texture, an equipoise balance without a single heavy low note but rather the lofty ethereal power of delicate rose Champagne as it ought to be.

Jansz Brut Rose 6/750
Characteristics: Fragrant marmalade, scents of plum pastry, nice ripe sweet/tart acids, bright and fresh, this is lovely rosé bubbly from a great champagne minded grower –although they do call their craft Méthode Tasmanoise
Wine review by Nicholas Livingston, October 2013

Specially selected and crafted individual batches form the basis of this Rosé. The fruit used in this wine is selected from cool climate vineyards across Tasmania dedicated to growing sparkling wine fruit. The Jansz Tasmania Premium Rosé is based upon Jansz wines from several vintages. As with our Premium Cuvée, batches are kept separate during winemaking to maximize blending options and final wine complexity. Secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle and is aged on yeast lees until the perfect balance of strawberries and cream is reached, which usually takes up to three years. Look for a vibrant, delicate pink hue with a fine persistent bead, a subtle nose of Turkish Delight and rose petal florals, and a mouth full of mousse creaminess and strawberries with a refreshing finish.
Notes from the winemaker

Jansz Tasmania Premium NV Rosé is a vibrant pink, reminiscent of rosewater and salmon. It has a lifted nose showing delicate rose petal and Turkish delight from the Pinot fruit, and fresh cream and nougat from the malolactic fermentation and extended aging on lees. The wine has a well balanced palate, with layers of strawberry fruit and creamy fine mousse. It finishes crisp and dry with zingy acid matched by lingering flavors of nougat, rose petal and citrus.

Marques de Caceres Rose 2011
Characteristics: 85% TEMPRANILLO 15% GARNACHA TINTA
Spanish rosé true to type: A rosado with red fruits of raspberries and strawberries akin to the La Vie de la Voisgienne tinned hard candies, Les Framboises and strawberries. Bright, crisp and dry, this is engaging and just as uplifting as when first released –one of the rosés that drink from the fountain of youth and taste as young as they came.
