Alto Adige & Alois Lageder

(posted 5/3/2011)

ArtisanVineyards.com welcomed Christian McIntosh, of Dalla Terra Winery Direct, to educate us about the Italian winemaking region of Alto Adige and how it produces such stunning wines. The name Alois Lageder is virtually synonymous with the wines of Alto Adige. As the fifth Alois Lageder to work these alpen vineyards, Alois and his family are inextricably linked to the rich heritage of the region and the inimitable wines that grow from old vines deeply anchored in the Dolomitic limestone that comprise these gifted soils.

Featured Wines

Lageder Chardonnay 2009
Characteristics: Alto Adige
Honey butter fragrance on the bouquet. This bright straw colored Chardonnay starts with tropical fruit and a hint of butter cream. On the mid-palate you will find crisp fresh white fruits with mineral notes. The bright acidity of this wine will allow you to pair with finger foods, your favorite fish or seafood, chicken or pasta.

"Description: brilliant, straw-yellow colour with light green hints; the aroma is delicate with pronounced notes of subtropical fruit; quite intense flavour and a good, medium-bodied structure, coupled with lively acidity. Under proper storage conditions, this wine will drink well for at least 2 to 4 years."

Lageder Chardonnay-Pinot Grigio Beta Delta 2009
Characteristics: This equal blend of Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay is Demeter Certified Biodynamic. It has a wonderful floral, mineral, citrus, fresh cut pear opening. Leading to a mouthful of bright lemon zest, asian pear, chamomile, all balanced by perfect acidity and polish. Wonderful long and clean finish.

A round lush quality of lemon and honey on the nose. Depth of complexity abounds. Silky, sexy, good acid and a supple mid-palate with a joyous finish. Great seafood/shellfish wine. Great.
- wine tasting note by TL, 2/10/12

Brilliant straw yellow colour with a green tint. Very fine, fruity (apples, peaches), forward varietal aroma. Pronounced, clean, elegant, grapey flavour, light to medium-bodied with a fresh mouth-watering finish. When properly cellared, this wine may be kept for at least 2 - 4 years.

Lageder Haberle Pinot Bianco 6/750 2009
Characteristics: Perfume of white flowers with a little vanilla custard on the nose. The palate is creamy with a bit of brioche and a lifted lemon-lime finish.
- wine tasting note by DYB, January 2012

A single vineyard selection from Alois Lageder, Haberle embodies a Pinot bianco imbued by the "Haberlehof" estate vineyard among the best in Italy’s mountainous Alto Adige. Above Salorno at an altitude of 1,500 – 1,710 feet, the stony and sandy soil combine with a rather cool mesoclimate to yield this engaging Pinot bianco bearing the fingerprint of this gifted place worthy of its own release. Slight lanolin and lemon pickle begin the nose on the right foot with a faint leesy tang to the overall wine –really captivating. Lemon zest and green apples bring great cut and punch to the palate that reveals a nuance of deftly integrated oak and a finish combining verve and light. From 20-45 year old vines, the Haberle is a Pinot bianco with profound depth –especially for a variety that usually prefers wading to such dynamic high diving. 12.5% alcohol by volume

Lageder Pinot Nero Krafuss 2007
Characteristics: Why have I ranked this wine as a “5” in our adventurousness rankings? Because who would think of Pinot Noir from Alto-Adige? Not me; and at this premium price? Ooh, would we be wrong. When early on I was sampled on New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc; I was blown away. A great fan of this varietal, I was stunned by its uniqueness; Sauvignon Blanc from no other region of the world tasted like this.* So too with Tenutae Lageder’s Pinot Noir from northern Italy.

The colour is old style Burgundy; light but persistent. What amazed me then and now about wines of this colour is they don’t age so dramatically, it will look like this 10 years on. The aromas are only idiosyncratically Pinot Noir. As it opens in an appropriate glass it brings me back to my youth. I grew up on America’s Great Plains where, even in my youth, many farms had been sold, the houses and out buildings abandoned. My cousin, Gene, and I hunted rabbits in the wood lots of these abandoned homesteads and most always toured the empty houses. Upon entering and especially upon opening cupboards and kitchen drawers, aromas of spices and dried foods changed the structure from a house to a home; inhabited by people who lived by the fruits of their labours on this very land. These are iterations on Pinot Noir that this vineyard takes for its own.

Verbosity is one of my faults. Let me stop writing then even though there is so much more to be said about Lageder Pinot Nero Krafuss 2007. Can you be motivated to share this marvelous and unique expression of Pinot Noir if I simply say that I have been willingly seduced by this wine and will never miss another vintage?
