Food & Wine Show 2009 Blind Tasting

(posted 3/1/2009)

At the 15th Annual Food & Wine Experience, ArtisanVineyards.com poured a captive audience through a blind tasting. Each guest-judge chose to sample three reds or three whites. One wine of each line up was a market benchmark and the other two were wines from the ArtisanVineyards.com portfolio.

Despite costing a great deal less, the selection from ArtisanVineyards.com conquered the competition in a variety of ways illustrating how fine wine can be found at great value. We welcome you to try this at home, to savor the results and to feel confident stocking wine from ArtisanVineyards.com.

Featured Wines

Bethel Heights Pinot Gris 2008
Characteristics: Wonderfully ripe spiced pear and caramelized apple on the nose. Definitely a more fruit forward style than the 2007 but still balanced very nicely by crisp acidity and a little chalky minerality. Really amazingly balanced. Young right now (4/10/09) but even a couple of months will add a lot of flesh here. It's really good. -WB, April 2009

Decero Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Characteristics: A deep purplish color, the Decero Cabernet Sauvignon has a pretty nose, with notable Cassis and red fruit character. It displays pure, bright fruits on the palate, with a persistent finish. The elegance and balance of the wine are its signature assets.

Jack Williams The King Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Characteristics: It should be mentioned that this wine doesn’t hang around our warehouse (or store shelves for that matter) for very long. Dave Ready Jr. has become one of THE Cabernet specialists when you are referring to those that come from the Alexander Valley region.

Scents and flavors of wintermint, licorice, tobacco, blueberry and black cherry are all evident and balance out nicely. On the palate, the wine is lush but firm, with nice tannins to round out the finish. You’d expect to pay more for a Cabernet this good from the Alexander Valley region. -CM

Santa di Terrossa Pinot Grigio 2007
Characteristics: We are very proud of this little go-getter. In the realm of Italian Pinot Grigio, there are too few haves among an ocean of have-nots. It’s a little like Austin Texas: a speck of deep Blue in a very Red State. Fresh, juicy, lemony, minty, lively –very ‘Sauvignon-y’! The real fun is tasting Santa di Terrossa against the expensive ‘Pinots Grigio’ out there –especially the one named after a holy Mexican cocktail. You’ll wonder why your friends (not you of course!) have been paying so much for so little when you could be drinking ‘Santa deeee’. -BH
