Biodynamic viticulture at Bethel Heights with Mimi Casteel

(posted 9/16/2010)

Biodynamic viticulture: myth or reality? Do moon phases and the orbiting planets determine the flavor of the wines we love? Very little stands in the way between Mimi Casteel and sustainable agriculture and it runs in the family. Her father Ted helped draft the LIVE guidelines that ensure the vineyards we love will endure for the next generation while protecting wildlife habitat and yielding great wine. One of the experiments at Bethel Heights is Biodynamic agriculture. Listen to Mimi speak to Artisan Vineyards about Rudulph Steiner, the various solutions and the merits of Biodynamism.

Featured Wines

Bethel Heights Chardonnay 2008
Characteristics: Remarkable even for the already stunning Bethel Heights with enough verve and depth to convert you to Oregon Chardonnay for a good time to come. With vineyards planted to Dijon and Wente clones, this Chardonnay combines ripe fruit with a nimble structure that are rounded out by a gentle duration in cask. Among America's best Chardonnays, this proves just how fortunate we are that the Casteel family ever chose to tend the vines of Willamette Valley.

Bethel Heights Eola Amity Hills Pinot Noir 2007
Characteristics: The nose is bright and fresh with a spicy herbaceousness (I wrote “fabulous” and “dead bush”), also hints of baking spices. The palate is also spicy and dark - cranberry and perhaps blackberry underneath. This is a juicy wine that has great precision and clarity at the same time. -Wine review by DYB

Bethel Heights Pinot Noir Casteel Reserve 2006
Characteristics: The nose is warm and plush but with great aromatics for a warmer vintage – forest wood and still mint, celery salt. The palate brings black cherry and black raspberry and a bit of cranberry at the end to balance. Spicy, delicious, thoughtful.
