2009 Vintage in Burgundy with Laurent Drouhin

(posted 3/9/2011)

Laurent Drouhin, fourth generation at Maison Joseph Drouhin, tells us his impressions of the 2009 vintage in Burgundy -one yielding expressive wines that are both structured and balanced, of immediate appeal and lasting promise. Fond of les vins de Bourgogne? This is your rare opportunity to see it in fine form during its youth and as it matures over the next decade or more. New to Burgundy and looking to dip your toe without the chill of an off wine? 2009 may be the best introduction to great wines of the region as well as the broader Village labels -as the full spectrum is showing brilliantly and perhaps more so from a house such as Drouhin whose wines are all Estate Wines, made from their own properties increasingly grown Organically or Biodynamically not for commercial recognition but rather in order to craft more terroir driven wines that express the parcels of land from which they come -these are wines grown in the vineyard. 2009s will be posted here as they arrive but in the mean time, enjoy some of the Drouhin's other great vintages wines listed below.

Featured Wines

Drouhin Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc 2005

Drouhin Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge 2003
Characteristics: It is distinguished by its elegance and finesse: round, velvety, and beautifully balanced. It has complexity and depth in a soft but very intense sort of way. Aromas are very refined with ripe black cherry, spices, earthy and lightly smoked notes with just the right touch of tannin. This wine can be put away 10 years or even 20, depending on the vintage; it can also be enjoyed in its youth, with all its glorious fruitiness. -Winery notes

Drouhin Brouilly 2006
Characteristics: Brouilly is one of the Cru Beaujolais each of which expresses a personality unique to its little plot of the entire Beaujolais region.

The aroma is of bright red fruits and the flavour too is very fruity. Soft and full in the mouth.

Drouhin Chablis Domaine Vaudon 2008
Characteristics: Style and elegance and lemon curd and pure Chardonnay fruit and all that there is to love about the distinctive marine-shell laden earth from which these grapes grow. The Drouhin family continues to impress by letting the fruit and the earth speak for itself. This wine has a long self-confident finish that satisfies for minutes.
- wine tasting note by JN, 9/7/12

The Drouhins' have very large holdings in Chablis. This is the Reserve Vaudon Chablis which is the best parcells of village Chablis. It is brilliant straw in colour, the nose is Chablis and more. The minerality that is prominent in the 2008 premier and grand cru is more restrained here; there is surprisingly effusive and totally charming fruit in the bouquet; white flowers and freshly sliced Bosc pear(Pyrus communis). In the mouth it is more 2008, lemon grass that I have found in many of these wines but here it is a bit more forward in the mouth. Then the marvelous exciting stimulating acidity, as bracing as a mitten full of snow in the face.

Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 2006
Characteristics: "Fine lace and silk are the words most often associated with this wine. Bright, intense colour and complex aromas evoking violet, black cherry and damp earth. According to the vintages, there are also notes of truffle and game. Refined tannins coat the palate. Good balance between texture and acidity. Long aftertaste, with notes of cherry and candied fruit." Tasting note by Véronique Boss-Drouhin

Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru 2005
Characteristics: We have more Red Burgundy without notes that any other varietal or region. That is probably because we buy more wines from this region than any other and barrel tasting notes are very early impressions so not very useful in this context. The wines vary within the region but are nearly all made from the same varietal, Pinot Noir, so I can give you a reliable idea of what to expect. The colour can range from robish to quite light but don’t be fooled. The nose is tease; its ethereal, dried roses, spring deciduous leaf, tea leaves and often a sweet earthiness. In the mouth it is often very supple and silken. The flavours are from a motley palette including cherries of most any hue, sometimes truffle, gaminess and a wonderful comforting earthiness.

Drouhin Chorey-les-Beaune Rouge 2006
Characteristics: Lots to love here for fans of really elegant Pinot Noir. The Drouhin family owns vineyards in the tiny village of Chorey (just outside of Beaune), and all fruit used is biodynamically farmed and hand picked from their vineyards. While medium in body, the intensity of blackberry fruit is substantial. That combined with licorice and black pepper spices indicate that this wine, while showing beautifully today, will also age gracefully.

Drouhin Chorey-les-Beaune Rouge 2007
Characteristics: "A very pleasant wine. Bright, clear red color. Aromas are surprising in their intensity and fruit. On the palate, a tender, supple, graceful, round body. Very flavorful in the aftertaste, with a hint of blackberry jam. When the wine gets older, wild blackberry is the dominant aroma. After three or five years, the wine takes on a distinctive smell of truffle and undergrowth evolving towards notes of venison." - Véronique Drouhin-Boss

Drouhin Cote de Nuits Villages Rouge 2008
Characteristics: 100% Pinot Noir

"A delicious red Burgundy, with harmonious flavors. Bright ruby color. On the nose, intense aromas of wild cherry, licorice and mild spices, evolving towards notes of undergrowth and mushroom. On the palate, excellent balance between tannin, acidity and "gras" (velvety texture). The aftertaste is reminiscent of little red berries".

Drouhin Moulin-à-Vent 2006
Characteristics: Like Morgon, Brouilly or Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent is a Cru of Beaujolais. On the top of a little hill and in the middle of the vines, one can still admire the "moulin à vent" (wind mill) that gave its name to the area. The mill is now 300 years old, but the vines have been cultivated here for a much longer time : the Romans could already appreciate the wine produced here. The soil is complex : granite with a high proportion of manganese ; the Gamay grape grows well on this soil. Moulin-à-Vent can be favourably compared to the wines of Côte d'or. It has good concentration and a great ability for ageing. The colour is deep purple and the nose shows intense fruit with spicy, ripe aromas. On the palate, the tannins are perceptible but elegant. The finish is long.

Drouhin Pouilly-Fuisse 2007
Characteristics: A stylish effort for both this vintage and price-point for Pouilly Fuisse! The nose is filled with bright lemon, tangerine and custard. Delicate hints of smoke are evident in both the nose and mouth, followed by bright citrus flavors, Gouda cheese and spice. A very tasty version from a reliable negociant.

Drouhin Pouilly-Fuissé 2008
Characteristics: What should Pouilly Fuisse taste like? Ah, Pouilly Fuisse should greet you with a warm embrace and leave you yearning for your next encounter. Creamy aromas of sweet and tangy buttermilk lure the nose into apples cut an hour ago and therefore extremely fragrant yet still fresh. Waxy lemon peels twist on a well balanced palate combining the verve unique to Burgundy with a calm, round texture that bears all the aromas along the palate, staying with you through the finish. 13% alcohol by volume
Wine review by Nicholas D. Livingston, February 2011

"A seductive wine and a really nice expression of the Chardonnay grape! The colour is golden, with some green reflections. Among the floral and fruity aromas, almond and ripe grapes dominate. On the palate, the wine is refreshingly pleasant, ethereal in its lightness. Long and refreshing aftertaste".

Drouhin Puligny-Montrachet 2008
Characteristics: The southern portion of Burgundy, the Cotes du Beaune is home to the other great Chardonnay wines in the world; Chablis is the other. The wine is generally aged in oak barrels and the fruit is usually riper giving fuller, rounder wines. Sites within the commune vary dramatically in quality and prices. The wines at Premier Cru level and above should be nutty, buttery and toasty, but with racy acidity and often hints of unusual mineral and stony flavours. These are white wines that can reward cellaring for between 5 and 15 years.

Drouhin Saint-Veran 2008
Characteristics: This is pristine Chardonnay fruit for not much money. A great Maconais vintage. Dialed-in purity marks this mouth watering wine. Fresh floral aromatics and no-nonsense flavors on the palate. Some green apple, some pear and a judicious touch of acid makes you want to have dinner (and/ or conversation). This would equally well as a "house" wine or a wine to serve when the boss is over for dinner.
- wine tasting note by JN, August 2010

A very nice floral and citrus-y nose. The mouth starts with a slight creaminess and then in the middle becomes full and rich. This wine has had no time with oak and the finish is crisp with tropical fruit flavors.

Drouhin Vaudon Chablis 2007
Characteristics: Drouhin does a fine job of swinging both legs around the style of certainly crisp, mineral, detailed Chablis but with a fuller body. This 2007 village Chablis is quite taut with lead-pipe mineral, flinty-smoke and a savory hazelnut note. There is a little lemon, orange and sea-spray too. This is nothing short of an excellent value. -BH (tasted February 2009)

Drouhin Vero Chardonnay 2005
Characteristics: “Vero” is winemaker Veronique Drouhin’s personal selection of grapes from specific villages and premier crus. There’s a lovely, delicate nose of lemongrass and fresh blossoms. The palate has a quintessentially Burgundian balance of creaminess and minerality. There’s pear and a little almond on the palate with great lift at the finish. (My husband says it reminds him of a hummingbird hovering). -Wine review by DYB, May 2009

Drouhin Vero Pinot Noir 2007
Characteristics: Joseph Drouhin, 2007 Vero, Burgundy
Lovely cherry driven Pinot Noir. Smells of red and black cherries and that Burgundian sap that pulls your face back into the glass. Juxtapose a waxy, sappy texture with a taut cherry compote with fresh, bright herbal high notes and you’ve caught a glimpse at delicious Burgundy at an astounding value. With a double entendre at play, Vero is both a nick name for Veronique, and a “true” expression of Burgundy as a whole as this is a blend of the great villages for which Burgundy is known.
