Bethel Heights’ Mimi Casteel on Organic Farming

(posted 9/16/2009)

Mimi Casteel of Bethel Heights speaks on Artisan Vineyards of the challenge and benefits of organic grape growing in the Eola-Amity Hills of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. What does it take for a vineyard and winery to be certified organic? Mimi elucidates this approach to sustainable agriculture.

Featured Wines

Bethel Heights Chardonnay 2007
Characteristics: This wine opens with a light apricot like bouquet with hints of spice and pears. This light bodied wine is balanced, crisp, with apple like flavors with light oak on finish.
- Wine Tasting Note by KS, February 2010

83% Dijon Clone, 17% Wente
WOW! Vintage after vintage this is THE Oregon Chardonnay to beat. Look out below when I’m drinking it, because expletives will be a droppin’! If more Oregon producers made Chardonnay like this, California would be in serious trouble. Crisp apple and pear fruit, with a bit of creamy crème brulee and little notes of Spanish olive-oil. The texture is supple and the finish persistent. This is (with Calera Mt. Harlan), one of our two best domestic chards at any price.

A touch of gold to the eye. A bit of apricot to the nose. Beautiful expressive chardonnay fruit on the palate. Light bodied, crisp and balanced with some apple and light oak on the back palate. A dry finish that stays with you in the nicest of ways.
- wine tasting note by JN, May 2009

Spicy and high toned in the nose with apple, nutmeg, and a little smoky yeast. The mouth is crisp and elegant but really persistent and long at the same time. The same spiced apple notes from the nose follow through nicely into the mouth. This is a very sexy chardonnay which is clearly not from California.

Bethel Heights Eola Amity Hills Pinot Noir 2006

Bethel Heights Eola Amity Hills Pinot Noir 2007
Characteristics: The nose is bright and fresh with a spicy herbaceousness (I wrote “fabulous” and “dead bush”), also hints of baking spices. The palate is also spicy and dark - cranberry and perhaps blackberry underneath. This is a juicy wine that has great precision and clarity at the same time. -Wine review by DYB

Bethel Heights Gewurztraminer 2008
Characteristics: Floral aromas featuring orange blossom and roses with an underlying current of citrus rind and minerality. Full yet crisp on the palate, developing lemon, mango, and passion fruit flavors, while retaining firm acidity and excellent length. -The Winery

Bethel Heights Pinot Gris 2008
Characteristics: Wonderfully ripe spiced pear and caramelized apple on the nose. Definitely a more fruit forward style than the 2007 but still balanced very nicely by crisp acidity and a little chalky minerality. Really amazingly balanced. Young right now (4/10/09) but even a couple of months will add a lot of flesh here. It's really good. -WB, April 2009

Bethel Heights Pinot Noir 2007
Characteristics: Really spicy, bright and pleasingly herbal with cola and black cherry notes filling out the nose. The mouth is fresh and light bodied. Spice and black raspberry lead the mouth which is crisp and smooth at the same time. This is a very "pretty" Pinot Noir. Yea! -WB, April 2009

Bethel Heights Pinot Noir Casteel Reserve 2006
Characteristics: The nose is warm and plush but with great aromatics for a warmer vintage – forest wood and still mint, celery salt. The palate brings black cherry and black raspberry and a bit of cranberry at the end to balance. Spicy, delicious, thoughtful.
