The 2007 vintage in Burgundy

(posted 5/26/2009)

With close to 90 different appellations, Joseph Drouhin offers a fascinating array of Burgundy terroirs in all their authenticity and subtle variations.

Joseph Drouhin Domaine is one of the largest estates in the region. It owns vineyards in all of Burgundy: Chablis (38 hectares), Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, (32 hectares), Côte Chalonnaise (3 hectares). It is comprised of a majority of Premier and Grand Crus.

This video was done at a pre-release tasting so many of the wines are yet to arrive. Keep checking back as first the simple appellation wines arrive then the premier cru arrive and finally the grand cru.

Drouhin Beaujolais-Villages 2007
Characteristics: To me Beaujolais has always been like that kid that your parents MADE you invite to your party. In this case it’s much more like their much cuter older sibling. Unexpectedly fresh and vibrant, with a classically grapey Beaujolais nose along with a touch of violet and raspberry syrup. The palate has good structure and plenty more red fruit. I have to give this begrudging kudos. -JL (tasted Feb '09)

Drouhin Macon-Villages Blanc 2007
Characteristics: A texture greets you as much and as soon as the orchard fruits that surface with a swirl and sip –a texture like polished marble both firm and magnificently smooth. All surfaces are faultless and surprisingly gentle for such solid strength. After the fruits on the finish subside and that high herbal note wisps away, I’m comforted by that creamy, well burnished texture. Such a Chardonnay at this price point is difficult to find. Burgundy within arms reach seldom shows so much regional character and it has never tasted so good for so little –and to think Drouhin’s vineyards are entirely organic, well done.

Drouhin Pouilly-Fuissé 2007
Characteristics: A stylish effort for both this vintage and price-point for Pouilly Fuisse! The nose is filled with bright lemon, tangerine and custard. Delicate hints of smoke are evident in both the nose and mouth, followed by bright citrus flavors, Gouda cheese and spice. A very tasty version from a reliable negociant.

Drouhin Saint-Veran 2007
Characteristics: Drouhin St Veran…seemingly a consistent wine in style vintage to vintage. The 2007 shows a nice bright orange blossom and grapefruit flavor, with a medium body. The finish is simple yet pleasant. -CM

Drouhin Vaudon Chablis 2007
Characteristics: Drouhin does a fine job of swinging both legs around the style of certainly crisp, mineral, detailed Chablis but with a fuller body. This 2007 village Chablis is quite taut with lead-pipe mineral, flinty-smoke and a savory hazelnut note. There is a little lemon, orange and sea-spray too. This is nothing short of an excellent value. -BH (tasted February 2009)
